Welcome to Chile’s Lake District, an area of rolling green fields, snow-capped volcanoes, and deep blue lakes. From Temuco airport, we will drive you to Pucon, Chile’s adventure capital, to your hotel base. Pucon is a charming town known for its excellent gastronomic fare, regional arts, and crafts scene, and spectacular views of the Villarrica Volcano, rising 9,340 feet above sea level.
You will explore the shores of La Posa and Playa Grande on the black sand beaches on Lake Villarrica. We will then head out on a half-day rafting adventure on the Trancura River, or kayak on River Duckies instead. We finish the day with a delicious dinner with your guides.
Overnight at a Pucon hotel, daily breakfast included - 4 nights.
Start the day by driving into the heart of the Andes mountains to the border with Argentina. This stunning area is a paradise for birdwatching, where we visit 2 to 3 Andean lakes surrounded by forests of ancient Araucarian trees.
We explore the woodlands (of mostly Nothofagus trees) with a gentle 3-4 hour hike offering striking views across to Lanin Volcano (3,780m), the highest volcano in all of the Lake district.
Afterward, we head back to town to get our mountain gear fitted for tomorrow. We end the day with the Colipi Family, a local Mapuche family who will prepare your dinner and share their culture and stories.
We have a 6:30 am departure today, because if the weather conditions are favorable we'll start driving to the Ski Resort located at the base of the Villarica volcano (1,400 meters above sea level).
Ascending this active volcano is an experience you won’t forget in a hurry - while the climb is not technical, you will need to be in good shape to get to the summit.
We can also take the chairlift to the higher part of the resort, at 1,800 m., which will save you about an hour of climbing. From the top, we will begin the ascent, taking regular brief breaks and a longer one to eat at about the halfway point to the crater. If we find hard snow or ice we can pop on the crampons and use the ice axes.
After 4 to 5 hours we will reach the pinnacle of our trek, the crater which sits 2,847 meters above sea level. The views from here, overlooking five lakes and several volcanoes such as Llaima and Lanín, will take your breath away. We then descend, returning to the vehicles around 5 pm and return to Pucón. You will have the night to go out, celebrate and explore Pucon.
Today we drive 60 km to Coñaripe, a small village located in Los Rios Region, and take a back road through the Llancahue River valley to Villarrica National Park. Expect to see more incredible views here, over to majestic snow-capped volcanoes of Quetrupillan and Rucapillan, and witness the vegetation change from rauli and hualle forests (Nothofagus) to 1000-year-old araucarias.
We reach Chinay, the day’s highest point at 1.250 meters above sea level, where we take the trail to the ash-covered, Pichi Llancahue Glacier, a phenomenal glacier which is absolutely covered by the blackish volcanic ashes of the Villarrica volcano. This stunning backdrop is where you will experience the solar eclipse, followed by a visit to the Geometric Hot Springs.
This unique spot offers the perfect combination of 16 thermal pools, nature views and simple but cozy facilities (a simple meal is available at the hot springs’ cafeteria). Hike - around 4-6 hours, depending on pace.
The time has come to leave the magical forests and volcanoes of Chile’s Lake District behind. After breakfast, we will transfer to Temuco Airport for you to catch your flight back to Santiago.

I really had a lovely time working with him and his suggestions and his willingness to accommodate all our needs was remarkable. Even while we were traveling we wanted to add something which he worked with us and provided all that.
I will recommend to anyone. We loved Patagonia, Iguassu Falls, Glaciers, Torre Del Paine.
