The days leading up to the eclipse will be spent touring this beautiful part of Chile. Our 5-day program includes hotel accommodations, daily guided excursions around the Elqui Valley and a special Eclipse day celebration.
The Elqui Valley is a verdant landscape dotted with vineyards and charming small towns such as Pisco Elqui and Vicuña. Syrah and Carmenere are produced here as is most of Chile's pisco. The Elqui Valley is an ideal location for observing the night sky with an average of 360 clear nights a year and over a dozen observatories based in the valley.
The Eclipse observation will be at a outdoor site with tent, chairs and dining facilities situated at the foot of Mamalluca Hill. Lunch and beverages will be supplied.
Pre-trip and post-trip options include Santiago and the surrounding Wine Region, Valaparaiso and Vina del Mar, the Atacama Desert, Easter Island.

You will be met at the Santiago Airport and transferred to your overnight accommodations at the Cumbres Lastarria Hotel.
This afternoon we can arrange an optional city tour of Santiago’s most important historic and cultural sites: Palacio La Moneda (Presidential Palace), the House of Justice, and the National Parliament, Plaza de Armas, San Cristóbal Hill.
Transfer to the airport for your 1-hour flight to La Serena. You will be met at La Serena’s La Florida Airport by your bilingual guide and tour coordinator. Transfer to your overnight accommodations for the next four nights. Along the way your guide will provide snacks and mineral water and a brief orientation of La Serena and the surrounding area.
Upon arrival at the hotel the group will be offered a welcome cocktail and hors d’oeuvres. After the reception you may retire to your room for a rest. Later this evening there will be a talk about the upcoming solar eclipse by a local astronomer followed by a three-course dinner at a nearby restaurant accompanied by the best and award winning wines produced in the Coquimbo Valley.
Overnight at the Las Velas Beach Hotel located beachfront in the quaint town of Guanaqueros, about 35 minutes from the city of La Serena. All 14 cabins have ocean views. Daily breakfast is included – 4 nights.
Head east to La Serena and onward to the mystic and majestic Elqui Valley (Valle de Elqui). On today’s tour, we will visit some of the most picturesque sights in and around the small towns and villages, where the tranquility, traditions and the kindness of its people turn it into a wonderful place.
Visit a traditional pisco distillery and learn about the production process of pisco. A local guide will tell us about its history and will lead a tour of the facilities showing all the stages of production. You may enjoy a pisco sour prepared by a professional bartender.
Visit Montegrande, a picturesque town wedged between mountains and green fields of vineyards. At the museum you will learn about the life and work of the Nobel Prize in Literature winner, Gabriela Mistral. A typical farm-to-table lunch will be served at a local restaurant featuring the traditional gastronomy and local products, including copao and papaya.
We will make our way between vineyards and mountains to the small artisan town of Pisco Elqui. Here you will be able to appreciate and acquire local products. You will walk by its ancient church, main square and through the typical narrow alleys. You will enjoy the exquisite juice of seasonal fruits. There will be time for walks on your own around the town and contemplate the typical architecture of the Elqui Valley.
Visit Vicuña, with the local architecture of the principal icons of the city such as the Bauer Tower and the Lourdes Church. Walk around this interesting artisan village and learn from the artisans themselves, watch them make their works with the opportunity of purchasing them.
A three-course dinner will be served at a restaurant in La Serena with local products and regional wines.
Today we head for the Limarí Valley for an easy hike in the “enchanted valley”, localy known as Valle del Encanto. After the hike we will visit one of the most prestigious wineries of Chile.
Visit the historical “Valle del Encanto” National Monument to learn about the pre-Columbian archaeology of the people who lived in this area hundreds of years ago, leaving their track of diverse petroglyphs across the valley.
Tour the Tabalí Vineyard (Viña Tabalí), their wine production, wine cellar with tasting.
Later this afternoon we make our way to higher ground and the Cruz del Sur Observatory. Here a local astonomer will will offer a tour of the observatory, a cocktail and a chance to view the clear skies of northern Chile through their telescope. Return to the hotel for a well-deserved rest.
Morning drive to the best observation point for the solar eclipse - the foot of “Mamalluca” hill, at 1,200 meters above sea level in the Andean foothills. The majesty of the landscape is astonishing. This area receives over 360 clear days a year. For this reason several photovoltaic energy plants and observatories have been installed around here. For today a campground with dining facilities and sanitary facilities will be installed. Lunch will be served at the campground.

Visit the main attractions of Coquimbo. Learn about its history, culture and traditions, ancient architecture and the legends of pirates and corsairs. The principal attractions include Barrio Inglés , Fuerte Lambert, Cruz del Tercer Milenio. Stop for a panoramic view of the city from Coquimbo’s biggest monument - the “Cross of the Third Millennium”.
Drive to the second oldest city in Chile, La Serena. Walk the streets of the historical downtown, past ancient churches and colonial-style constructions, including the Archaeological Museum of La Serena and “La Recova” Market. Lunch will be at a local restaurant.
After lunch we will transfer to the airport for your flight to Santiago.
